As we voice our opinions and stand up for what we believe, it’s important to stay safe.  Interested in joining a future protest?  Contact our President.

Tips for Protest Safety

  • Buddy System: Choose a protest buddy and stay with them throughout the event.
  • Be Aware: Be aware of your surroundings, stay on the sidewalk, and watch for traffic.
  • Physical Comfort: Wear comfortable clothing.  Stay hydrated and prepare for weather.
  • Community Care: Take care of yourself and the community around you.
  • Ignore Agitators: If you encounter agitators, stay calm, ignore them, and move on.
  • Exit Plan: Know your exit strategy. Plan multiple routes into and out of the area.

Your Rights

  • Your rights are strongest in “traditional public forums”, such as streets, sidewalks, and parks.
  • Counter protestors have rights too.  Police can keep groups apart if within sight and sound.
  • You may photograph anything in plain view, including police.
  • You don’t need a permit to march in the streets or sidewalk, so long as you don’t block traffic.

Violations

  • If you believe your rights have been violated, write down everything you remember.
  • Record officer’s badge numbers and the agency they work for.
  • Get witness contact information.
  • Take a photograph of any injury.
